Yin Yoga through the wisdom of the Five Elements

From understanding to application

At the heart of this training is our own approach to bringing the wisdom of the Five Elements into Yin Yoga — a methodology developed and refined by Marcela and Tobias through many years of teaching, practice and experience.

The Five Elements give you more than a body of knowledge. They give you a framework for understanding yourself, the world around you, and the relationships between the two.

As you begin to understand the qualities, relationships and dynamics of the Elements, you can start to apply that understanding to the practice — and to life.

If you teach, this might influence the way you theme a class, choose and sequence postures, tell a story, create the atmosphere in the room, or design an elemental journey with a particular intention.

If you practise for yourself, it gives you the tools to create a Yin practice that responds to what is actually happening in your life. A change of season. A period of grief. A time of overwhelm. A major transition. Instead of always relying on someone else to decide what practice you need, you begin to develop the understanding to make those choices for yourself.

And the framework extends beyond the yoga mat. It can offer insights into your patterns, your choices and your relationships — with yourself and with others — as well as how you eat, move, rest, sleep and navigate different seasons and periods of your life.

This is where the wisdom becomes tangible.

Through Yin Yoga, meditation, Qi Gong, breathwork, somatic practices and other embodied approaches, we don’t just study the Elements intellectually. We experience them.

The aim isn’t to give you another formula to follow. It’s to develop an understanding you can feel, recognise and work with — so that you can bring it into your practice, your teaching, your relationships and the way you move through everyday life.

Why this training is different

A methodology developed through years of teaching

Our approach

A living system, not a formula

Our Five Elements methodology has been developed and refined through many years of teaching, practice, observation and experience.

It grew from a desire to explore the Five Elements in Yin Yoga in a way that goes beyond simply learning which meridians relate to which postures. Rather than treating the Elements as another layer of information to add to a Yin practice, we work with the deeper qualities, relationships and dynamics of the Five Elements as a framework for understanding and creating practice.

This means learning to see the Elements as a living system — and to work with their subtleties, patterns and relationships rather than following a fixed formula.

The result is a more intuitive and responsive way of working with Yin Yoga, where your understanding of the Elements can inform how you shape a practice, teach a class and respond to the person or moment in front of you.

Your teachers

Learn from experienced practitioners

Chinese Medicine and Five Element wisdom are taught by Tobias, a practicing Chinese Medicine practitioner and acupuncturist with more than 25 years of clinical experience.

Yin Yoga and teaching methodology are taught by Marcela, with more than 15 years of international teaching experience and more than 40 teacher trainings behind her.

You are learning directly from practitioners who have spent decades studying, practising and teaching their respective fields — bringing depth of experience rather than simply adding another subject to the curriculum.

Each training is also enriched by experienced guest teachers who bring their own areas of expertise, perspectives and lived experience. They contribute their particular “zone of genius” to the programme, adding depth, diversity and fresh perspectives to the learning experience.

A distinctive thread

Chinese Face Reading

Chinese Face Reading is another distinctive part of the training.

Through the face, you learn to observe qualities and patterns associated with the Five Elements, developing greater interpersonal intelligence and a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

It offers a fascinating way to recognise signs of strength and weakness and explore how the Five Elements can express themselves through our facial characteristics, tendencies and ways of relating.

Our teaching comes from Lillian Pearl Bridges (1956–2021), regarded as a leading authority in the field. Tobias is one of a small number of Master Face Readers to have trained with her in person. We continue these teachings in gratitude for what she passed on.

The setting

An intimate three-week immersion

We intentionally keep our groups relatively small, usually around 15–20 students.

Three weeks at The Sanctuary — a remote, natural setting, nestled in a stunningly beautiful small bay on Koh Phangan, Thailand — gives you the opportunity to step away from everyday routines and fully immerse yourself in the practice.

Living and learning together creates space for personal attention, meaningful connection and a strong sense of community. The environment becomes part of the experience, giving you time to slow down, disconnect from the outside world and truly be present with what you are learning.

The 150-hour journey

Three weeks. Two levels. One integrated journey into Yin Yoga, Chinese Medicine and the wisdom of the Five Elements.

The full 150-hour training brings together Level 1 and Level 2 as one continuous immersion. You begin by building a strong foundation in Yin Yoga and Five Elements wisdom, then move deeper into the therapeutic, embodied and practical applications of what you have learned.

Level 1 · 100 hours

Building the foundations

Level 1 introduces the essential foundations of Yin Yoga, Chinese Medicine and the Five Elements.

You explore the principles of Yin and Yang, Qi, the meridian system and the Five Elements, while developing a deeper understanding of Yin Yoga as a practice.

Through asana practice, posture clinics, teaching methodology, meditation, Pranayama, Medical Qi Gong, Chinese Face Reading and other embodied practices, you begin to experience the teachings through your own body.

A central part of Level 1 is learning how to work with the Five Elements within Yin Yoga — developing the understanding and practical tools needed to create meaningful, unique and intentional practices rather than simply following a set sequence.

Level 1 includesYin Yoga · Chinese Medicine · Five Elements · Yin & Yang · Meridians · Asana & Posture Clinics · Teaching Methodology · Meditation · Pranayama · Medical Qi Gong · Chinese Face Reading · Embodied Practice
Level 2 · 50 hours

Going deeper

Level 2 builds on the foundations of Level 1 and takes the exploration into more subtle and therapeutic territory.

You deepen your understanding of the Five Elements and begin to work with them in more complex and nuanced ways — including exploring how different Elemental patterns may express themselves through trauma responses, and how combining Elements can create richer and more specific intentions for practice.

You also develop a deeper understanding of the nervous system and its relationship to Yoga practice, and explore somatic tools that can support nervous system regulation within a Yin Yoga setting.

Your sequencing skills also develop further. Rather than simply arranging postures, you learn to work with the energetic arc of a class — understanding how a practice can move from Yin to Yang, or Yang back towards Yin, and how the energy of the whole journey can support a particular intention.

Level 2 is about bringing everything together with greater depth, complexity and awareness — learning to recognise patterns, make more informed choices and create practices that respond to the person, intention and moment in front of you.

Level 2 includesAdvanced Five Element Applications · Trauma-Informed Practice · Nervous System Awareness · Somatic Practices · Advanced Sequencing · Feng Shui · Medical Qi Gong · Self-Inquiry & Embodied Practice
The complete 150 hours

Level 1 gives you the foundations. Level 2 deepens and expands them. Together, they create the complete journey.

Taking both levels consecutively allows the learning to unfold naturally over three weeks.

Rather than stepping in and out of the material, you have time to absorb the teachings, practise them, observe what changes through your own experience and continue building on what you have learned.

The full 150-hour immersion is the most complete expression of our training.

Level 1 and Level 2 can also be taken separately. Some students join us for one level and return at another time to continue their journey.

Build your own toolkit

More than a collection of techniques

By the end of the training, you have a deeper understanding of the Five Elements and a growing toolkit of practices and approaches that you can draw from with intention.

SequencingThe energetic arc of a practice

You learn how to bring these elements together to create a practice or teaching experience with a clear intention — an elemental journey that can support you or the people you teach.

The goal isn’t to give you one way of teaching Yin Yoga. It’s to give you the understanding and tools to develop your own way of working with the Five Elements.

Yin Yoga and the Five Element system contributed to big changes in my practice, my teaching and in my life. Marcela and Tobias managed to share their deep knowledge about the elements and yin yoga in such an interesting, genuine, fun and professional way.

The immersion

Three weeks to step out of your usual rhythm

For three weeks, The Sanctuary becomes your home, your classroom and your community.

Set on a quiet beach surrounded by jungle and ocean, with no roads and no cars, it is a place where you can slow down, disconnect from everyday life and give your full attention to the practice.

You’ll spend much of your time barefoot in paradise — moving between learning, practice, rest, nature, nourishing food and time together.

Living and learning alongside a small group of like-minded people becomes part of the journey too. Friendships form, conversations continue beyond the classroom, and the learning naturally extends into everyday life.

There is space to absorb what you’re learning, connect with the people around you and simply be present with the experience.
